July 2009 DC Bar Exam

Well kiddies, it is that time of year again. Another bar exam has come and gone.

I hope everyone survived relatively unscathed and is basking in the afterglow of a job well done.

I did receive a comment from a anon poster in reply to on of my previous blog entries. I thought I would make a new post (aside from the fact that I am way overdue for a new post) with the specific essay info for the July 2009 DC bar exam:

Trusts
Secured Transactions
Con Law
Crim Law / Crim Pro (with Evidence included as well)
Family Law / Conflict of Laws
Wills

Actual DC July 2009 MPT topics:

Memo to senior attorney (analysis of defense)
Letter to opposing counsel

Scary that I managed to flag 5 out of 6 essay topics in my bare bones predictions. (Of course, that only happens when you aren't actually taking the bar and just observing from a distance).

I trust that everyone is decompressing from study mode now. It is a weird feeling to try and keep your mind so focused on something for weeks on end, then, suddenly be done with it.

Trust your studying and work. The torpedo is in the water. Now, just kick back and wait for the explosion in the distance (blowing a hole in the side of ship otherwise known as the bar exam graders).

Good luck everyone! (especially the repeaters out there)

In regards to the MEE, you mentioned elsewhere on your blog that:

"There is some scaling factor that converts the raw score to something out of 200."

Does this mean the scaling is similar to the MBE?

Yes, that is exactly it. From the DC Court of Appeals web site (FAQ section, http://www.dcappeals.gov/dccourts/appeals/coa/faq.jsp):

"How are the examination results calculated?
A raw essay score is converted to a scaled score using the standard deviation method. The basis for this scaling is the distribution of the MBE scaled scores of the applicants taking the essay portion of the examination."

Can you link to this blog you mentioned earlier:

"I know another DC bar blogger that posted that she got a 15 on one of her essays during a failed attempt."

I already have it linked ("The Law Activist (D.C.)" in my blog list on the main page.
If I recall correctly, she passed the July 2007 exam, so you'll have to do some searching from Oct 07 back to catch her posts on her previous DC bar attempts/scoring.

How soon after they post the results at the courthouse are they available online? Won't be in DC for the next few weeks and it'll drive me crazy as people find out in person.

Anon-

I'm not really sure. I don't know anyone that was hanging around the courthouse to see when they physically posted results there. I would guess that they do it simultaneously or very close to it.
I first found out that my results were available from a comment that another DC exam taker left on my blog that said something to the effect of "Results are online!!!!!!"
Just keep checking online in the coming week(s) (both the Court of Appeals site at http://www.dcappeals.gov/dccourts/appeals/coa/index.jsp AND DC Bar site at http://www.dcbar.org/for_lawyers/membership/current_members/examResults.cfm.
One of them was updated right away and the other wasn't, but I can't recall which it was (also make sure you refresh the page).
Good luck!

I didn't pass and am really thinking about not taking it again- I hate this, I have to now tell everyone that I didn't pass and respond to their stupid comments like Oh don't worry you'll pass it next time--- I don't want to do it next time this hurts-

What are your predictions for February 2010 DC Bar Exam? What subjects do you see being presetned in the MEE?

Thanks!

would you please consider making a prediction for the July 2010 Bar exam?

I would really appreciate your best prediction for the February 2013 MEE essays as well as he MPT letter types. Take your time. I'm thankful for your input. The "good" essays on MPT analyses sheets seems so basic and brief, so matter of fact that its hard to believe that if I wrote that way it would score well.

Also, How is life in practice in D.C. since you started practicing law or am I assuming too much?
